Italian landscape, populated with many small figures, is flecked with highlights and terminates in a distant lake, or
maybe the sea, with its tiny daubs of white sails (Fig. 9), just like the distant sails in Reni’s Bacchus and Ariadne (Los
Angeles County Museum)8. This also has echoes of Niccolò’s Aristeos and Euradice in London’s National Gallery.
