Neoclassicism
European Neoclassicism in the visual arts dates from c. 1760 in opposition to the then-dominant late Baroque and Rococo styles. Rococo architecture emphasizes grace, ornamentation and asymmetry. Neoclassicism, the name given to Western movements in the decorative and visual arts, literature, theatre, music, and architecture draws inspiration from the ‘classical’ art and culture of Ancient Greece and Rome. Born in Rome in the mid-18th century, Neoclassicicm’s popularity spread across Europe, as a generation of European aristocrats and students completed their Grand Tour returning from Italy with newly rediscovered Greco-Roman ideals. In Italy Pompeo Batoni and Canova and in France Vincent, David and Ingres were proponents of the style, all artists recently handled by The Matthiesen Gallery.
