Gothic to Early Renaissance

The term Gothic relating to a period of art generally applies to church architecture dating post 1160 but it became synonymous with the artistic trend, particularly in Italy, for artists to engage in greater realism and perspective leading to the developments of the early Renaissance. Artists handled by The Matthiesen Gallery include some of the leading artists of the period: Lorenzo Monaco, Gentile da Fabriano, Jacopo da Cione, Giovanni di Paolo, Giovanni del Biondo, Simone Martini and Antonello da Messina.
