Bio

Claude Dubufe was one of the last French pupils of David and, like his contemporaries began his career as a painter of classical history subjects. With the restoration, however, he became interested in more contemporary subjects and eventually concentrated almost exclusively on portraiture. With their high finish and sophisticated elegance, Dubufe’s later portraits may be compared with the portraits of Ingres, although Dubufe remains less detached from the character of his subjects.
