Chassériau’s experiences in North Africa wrought a fundamental change in his painting style. The influence of romantic literature had already encouraged him to adapt a broader, freer manner than his master Ingres; the brilliant costumes and exotic sensuality of the Moslem and Jewish women he encountered in Algeria now entranced the young artist, transforming his palette.
