Luca Carlevaris

1665 - 1731

Bio

Carlevaris was the precursor of Canaletto as the painter of Venice, and his Vedute, 103 etchings, were published in 1703. A sketch book is in the British Museum, and a volume of 53 oil sketches in the V&A, with paintings in the Royal Collection, Detroit, Dresden, Venice and elsewhere. The large picture of Lord Manchester’s Embasy to Venice was probably the reason for his patronage by the English.
