Samson Captured by the Philistines - Samson & Delila
(Giacomo Cavedone)

Description

The painting, Samson captured by the Phillistines, mentioned in Malvesia, wasa in the writer’s own collection. Dr. Laura Giles draws attention to the exixtence of a preparatory drawing, In. 6271, in the Cabinet des Dessins, Louvre, which she published in the Revue du Louvre. The Samson probably dates slightly earlier than the ‘Ecce Homo’ exhibited at Matthiesen Fine Art in 1981. Malvesia comments that when the picture was in his collection, it was deemed to be of such high quality that it was often thought to be by the hand of Ludovico. A further preparatory drawing for the head of ‘Delila’ is preserved in the Royal Collection, Windsor, and is reproduced by Kurz as being by Cavedone.
