Description

One of Vernet’s closest disciples was Pierre-Jacques Volaire (1729-after 1793) whose magnificent views of Vesuvius Erupting were popular with visitors to Naples. This work, on a similar scale and date to the Vernet Storm shows groups of tourists gazing at the magnificent spectacle.
