Subleyras arrived in Toulouse from Uzès in 1726, and after two years of study with a local painter travelled to Rome in 1728 where he encountered Francois Boucher. There he atttracted the attention of the Duke of Saint Aignan, French Ambassador to the Holy See. While he concentrated primarily on small genre and literary subjects, he was also commissioned to paint some important religious and historical subjects and produced some fine portraits. A recent monographic exhibition in France demonstrated the breadth of his considerable talent.
